Thomas is a blue tank engine who works on the North Western Railway. He originally worked as the station pilot at the Big Station at Vicarstown, but longed to leave his yard to go out and see the world. After helping to rescue James from a nasty accident, Thomas was rewarded with two new coaches, Annie and Clarabel, and was given the responsibility of running the Ffarquhar Branch Line. He works there to this day.

Biography[]

Thomas was built and arrived on Sodor in 1915. It's unknown how he got there, but the most popular theory put forward, however, is that he was sent to Sodor in a wartime mix-up. His driver and fireman got along well with the local people and married Sudrian women. By 1920, neither one wanted to leave the Island or their beloved engine and later on, he was sold to the North Western Railway.

Thomas originally worked as the station pilot at Vicarstown, shunting trains for the bigger engines on the mainline to take out. He enjoyed teasing the other engines, especially Gordon, who he would quietly sneak up on and whistle loudly while Gordon dozed on a siding. Eventually, Gordon managed to get back at Thomas by pulling out of the station before he could be uncoupled from his coaches, dragging him down the line at a tremendous speed. Thomas learned to not tease him again.

Thomas longed to see more of the world and become a part of it and became jealous of the bigger engines for having the chance to pull trains. He did try it himself and has had a few incidents with both coaches and trucks, (the former for accidently leaving them behind and the latter by getting pushed down Gordon's hill by them) but after James ran out of control with his trucks and derailed in a field outside the station, Thomas fetched the Breakdown Train and rushed to James' aid and he helped to clean up the broken trucks and bring James back to the shed when he was re-railed. As a reward for his actions, Thomas was given two new coaches, Annie and Clarabel, and was given the responsibility of running the Ffarquhar Branch Line, much to his delight.

In 1924, he receives the line. Thomas loves his branch line dearly and had many adventures during his days on the line. He met a coffee-pot engine named Glynn who used to run his line before he arrived.

In 1925, He once left his guard behind by accident and met a small purple tank engine named Lady (who he had feelings for). On one occasion, he accidentally swallowed a fish in his tank when he took on water from the lake, causing him tremendous pain. Lady did tease him all night because of it. Thomas tried to impress her by accidently running into Sir Topham Hatt's house. The two became great friends after that.

In 1935, Thomas insulted Terence for having caterpillar tracks and said he looked ugly. He soon learned to not judge a book by it's cover when Terence pulled him out of a snowdrift after he refused to wear his snowplough. Later on that year, he met a bus named Bertie and had a race with him to the end of the line.

During the time of World War ll, in 1939 - 1945, he was one of the eight engines who volunteered on the front lines along with Edward, Henry, Gordon, Lady, Colin, Lily and Eagle.

In 1951, Toby would join Thomas on his branchline as it was found to be illegal for Thomas to go on the Quarry Tramroad without sideplates or cowcatchers. At first Thomas was jealous, but became good friends with Toby when he rang his bell to frighten the policeman.

In 1952, Thomas attempted to go pass a danger side, but ended up falling down a mine. Charlie pulled him out. Later on in that year, when Glynn was thinking about being scrapped (and he almost was) Thomas told him he could be preserved on the England Heritage Railway as a museum piece. Glynn liked the idea and became that.

In 1958, Rosie revealed to everyone that she was the one who killed Dennis, because of how she idolized Thomas. She was thrown into the smelting pit by him and Charlie.

In 1959, Thomas was given the task of delivering a jet engine. He goes so fast that he goes back in time to 1922. Some of his friends never arrived or were scrapped. With the help of Neil, Thomas went back to 1922 to fix his mistake, hoping to make his future a bright one.

Personality[]

Thomas is described as being a cheeky, fussy engine. He often gets into scrapes, usually by being over-eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. But clouds never last long in Thomas' life and he is soon bustling about again, playing his part in the yard and on his very own branch line, of which he is extremely proud.

He loves teasing the others, especially the bigger engines, such as Gordon and on occasion brags about his superiority, but is always brought down to earth in due course by anyone willing to correct him, especially Sir Topham Hatt and his two coaches, Annie and Clarabel. If Thomas has one major character flaw, it is that he is forgetful and rather impatient and he might drive others away at times. However, Thomas is very good at luring back friends should the situation demand it and is also optimistic, idealistic, and altruistic with a heart of gold.

A friend to all engines and a popular member of Sir Topham Hatt’s Railway, Thomas is No.1 and does his best every day to live up to that through helping his friends and those that he cares about. He is firm friends with Lady, Colin, and Percy in particular. He lives to be a Really Useful Engine and encourages everyone else to do the same. He likes to be better than Bertie in races.

Despite all this, he does have his pride and will sometimes take the wrong advice at the wrong time, as well as refusing help even when he needs it.

Technical Details[]

Basis[]

Thomas is based on the LB&SCR Class E2 0-6-0T, particularly the second batch of locomotives built with extended side-tanks. These engines were built by Brighton Works between 1913-1916 to replace the aging Stroudley E1 class and were primarily used for heavy shunting and short-distance goods trains in the London area and on the south coast.

Thomas has several major differences from the original E2 class. He is much shorter in length than his original basis, he has two extra windows on the sides of his cab and he has wheel splashers, something the original E2 class lacked.
